Behaviour Strategies

Having a toolkit of behaviour strategies is crucial for navigating difficult moments with our children. Behaviour is a form of communication and understanding the function is the first step in developing strategies for managing the behaviour. Behaviour strategies include ways to prepare for potentially triggering times and ways to respond when the triggers have happened. They provide a clear pathway forward and support us to feel relaxed and more confident in managing the behaviours of concern.

Some common behaviour areas include:

  • Not following instructions
  • Meltdowns
  • Verbal and physical aggression
  • Running away
  • Fussy eating
  • Sensory differences
  • Sexualised behaviours
  • Sibling conflict

If a behaviour poses a risk to the safety of the child or anyone else, it may be necessary to prepare a safety plan which includes both preventative and reactive strategies. This will be discussed with the parent first, and will incur a fee for time.
